DR RICHARD BARNES
BE, PhD, FIEAust, CPEng, NPER
In a sea of architects and interior designers, Richard is the engineering island. Richard formally joined BureauSRH in 2017, but has been working with Simon for close on 20 years in an overall structural engineering career now exceeding 30 years.
Richard has provided structural engineering input for some of Sydney’s best known landmarks, including the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Tower.
Working with BureauSRH, structural engineering advice has been provided for a wide range of uniquely individual houses in the Eastern Suburbs. Some of the achievements include glass-walled and cantilevering swimming pools, floating stairs, large column-free spaces and unobstructed window openings, and all sorts of cantilevered and apparently unsupported living spaces.
Richard is also a keen adventurer, involved with Scouts, and specializing in expedition kayaking. He has paddled in many countries including Chile, Alaska, New Zealand and Antarctica. He has paddled across Bass Strait a number of times, and is currently dreaming to paddle the Tasman to New Zealand.
